Ohio Spiderwort

Ohio Spiderwort is a distinct and fascinating native perennial that brings early color to the wildflower garden. Starting in late May, it grows quickly to display clusters of deep violet flowers. These blooms have a unique daily rhythm: they open with the morning sun to provide pollen for honeybees, then close tight as the afternoon heat sets in. While each individual blossom lasts only a day, the plant produces a steady succession of new buds to keep the display going through the spring and early summer.

This clump-forming species is an excellent choice for prairie plantings or meadow gardens, preferring soil that isn't too heavy or wet. It is important to note its natural lifecycle: after its vigorous spring show, the foliage will fade and the plant will go dormant by August to escape the summer heat. Because of this, it pairs well with late-blooming species that can fill in the gap. Once established, it is easily propagated by division.
